Swimming
Across the whole school, the objective is for all children to leave Key Stage 2 with key swimming and water safety skills, which include:
Swimming a minimum of 25 meters without stopping
Using a range of strokes (e.g., front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke)
Demonstrating safe self-rescue techniques to respond to water emergencies
We prioritise these skills because swimming is not just a sport or leisure activity—it is a life-saving skill. Being able to swim confidently helps ensure children are safe in various water environments, whether it’s pools, lakes, or the sea. It also provides opportunities for lifelong physical fitness and well-being. Furthermore, learning safe self-rescue techniques prepares children to handle unexpected situations and emergencies with greater confidence and control. By embedding these essential skills into our school curriculum, we aim to promote safety, resilience, and independence, equipping all children to thrive beyond their time in primary education.
The class teacher has extensive knowledge of the school’s swimming and water safety assessment grid. This expertise allows for tailored 1:1 support to help each child progress through the award levels according to their ability.
