School Uniform

It is our school policy that all children wear school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school-organised event outside of normal hours.

Our policy on school uniform is based on the notion that school uniform:

  • Promotes a sense of pride in the school
  • Engenders a sense of community and belonging towards the school
  • Is practical and smart
  • Identifies the children within the school
  • Makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance
  • Is regarded as suitable wear for school and good value for money
  • Is designed with health and safety in mind
  • It is expected that all children will come to the school every day in full, neat, clean uniform, giving the message that our children take pride in belonging to our school. The support of parents and carers in ensuring this is expected. Staff are required to ensure these standards from children at all times.

Jewellery

We do not allow our children to wear jewellery in our school. The exceptions to this rule are:

  • small stud earrings in pierced ears
  • a plain wristwatch
  • jewellery linked to medical reasons – parents/ carers are requested to provide this information in writing
  • jewellery worn for religious reasons – parents/ carers are requested to provide this information in writing
  • Any jewellery worn for exceptional circumstances as outlined above is worn at the parents/carers discretion and should be age appropriate for the chid whilst engaged in their daily school activities.

On health and safety grounds, children should remove earrings for PE and should remove any other worn jewellery. If the child has recently pierced ears, they must be covered with a plaster (provided by parents or carers) during all PE activities.

Hair

Hair must be worn in an appropriate conventional style. Hair styles must be such that they can easily be kept neat and do not prevent students from participating effectively and safely in all school activities. The school actively discourages children from having ‘extreme’ haircuts that could serve as a distraction to other children or serve to undermine the ethos or discipline of the school. The dying of hair is discouraged, although hair dyed in natural colours is acceptable – other colours are not permitted.

Make up and nail varnish

Make up and nail varnish (including false nails) must not be worn in school.

Tattoos

Temporary tattoos should not be visible during term time.

Monitoring

The school retains the right to act as the final authority in the interpretation of our uniform expectations. If unsure, parents/ carers and children are advised to contact a senior member of staff for clarification before purchasing an item.

The school’s senior leadership team will challenge lack of adherence to the expectations in a way considered by them to be appropriate to the child’s stage of development.

Occasionally, parents or carers may make a temporary request for exemption from our expectations, e.g. adjustment following injury, awaiting new items. This should be made to the child’s class teacher in the first instance.

Should a child persistently present in school not wearing school uniform, without the agreement of the Headteacher, the Headteacher will write to the parents/carers requesting that the correct uniform is used, or a meeting is convened to discuss this. Where a parent or carer refuses to support the school policy, the school may take additional measures in line with the school’s behaviour policy or LA guidance.

Footwear

The school wants all children to grow into healthy adults. We believe that it is appropriate for children to wear flat shoes (no platform soles, high heels or straps). Children should wear plain black school shoes or plain black trainers. Converse or pump style shoes are not permitted. As the children are very active all day in our Early Years Foundation Stage, we do encourage black training shoes in Reception.
